In the Jungle, the Mighty Jungle

We arrived yesterday at the Daintree Rainforest, the only place in the world where rainforest meets reef. We drove through the trees for what seemed like hours at a speed that would kill any emu who tried to cross the road. We settled in and got the only 4 person room while all the other girls had to share 7 person rooms. Score. We then took a night walk with our new professor Piggie. He had a great, long white beard and seems fun. We saw birds, frogs, stick insects, and many spiders. At one point, he made us all turn off our flashlights, so that we were in complete darkness. Everything felt more alive, sounds seemed louder and it was a crazy experience.

Today, we had a guided walk with Rosalie in the morning through the same trail we went on last night. During the walk, we had an extra surprise: a cassowary sighting! It was truly a magnificent bird. The closest thing to a dinosaur I have ever seen. This time we went all the way to Myall Beach. This is my favorite beach. Hands down. It was endless and the mangroves, palm trees, and clear turqoise water made it so picturesque. It felt like a movie.

After lunch, we had the whole day to spend for ourselves. Liesal, Esther and I really wanted to going ziplining, even though we heard it was booked, so we headed over to the facility to see if we could catch a standby or cancellation. Turns out, we would be able to go tomorrow morning at 7:45. I am beyond excited. Ziplining through a rainforest is freakin crazy. Another life goal will be accomplished. GAH. I bought a cassowary plush to commerorate the one we saw this morning. His name is Cassy.

We then suited up and headed out to the water hole, apparently the only safe place to swim around here free of crocs and stingers. The water was cold at first but it was a very refreshing relief from the humidity. I wasn't brave enough to try the rope swing, but Esther and I wandered downstream and swam around. Our next stop was the beach and there we discovered sting rays and mud skippers (jumping fish). We walked along the water's edge and the water was comfortably warm. Esther and I walked the entire length of beach. We had to cross a channel with water up to our thighs. It was slightly terrifying since we couldn't exactly see the bottom and the possibility of running into a stingray or a croc was high. We made it though and relished our success at surviving.

Now I'm waiting for my dinner of fish n chips. Hope it's good!
